Top officials in the Biden administration claim to know the importance LNG exports have to global energy security. Then why are they halting new LNG permits at a time of geopolitical volatility? This shortsighted ban is a win for Russia, and a loss for America’s allies, U.S. jobs and worldwide climate progress. It’s time for this administration to stop playing politics with our national security.

NEW: As Europe turns away from Russian energy, U.S. LNG is filling the void, says API’s Mike Sommers in today’s Financial Times. In 2022, American producers increased LNG shipments by 119% compared to the year prior, at a time when Europe received 45% of its imported natural gas from Russia. But it’s not just about meeting energy needs. U.S. LNG can also help E.U. member countries reduce emissions and meet environmental commitments. More here: https://t.co/x41RzfLyXX

In the new National Environmental Policy Act Phase II (NEPA II) rule, Washington has taken a federal review process that already is a major obstacle to building important infrastructure of all kinds and made it worse. API’s Dustin Meyer: “This final rulemaking is the opposite of what is needed to create a durable and predictable permitting review process to unleash energy investment in America. Amid rising demand for affordable, reliable and cleaner energy sources, this final rule adds bureaucratic roadblocks to an already arduous process, jeopardizing the buildout of needed projects and low carbon infrastructure.” The new rule misses congressional intent in NEPA reforms passed in the 2023 Fiscal Responsibility Act, lacks transparency and disproportionately favors renewable energy sources and is tilted against oil and natural gas. As finalized, the rule could stop the permitting of many U.S. energy projects needed to serve Americans and consumers overseas. Read more … https://lnkd.in/eFtM4Gb4

America has a lot of natural gas. According to a new National Petroleum Council (NPC) study released this week, “Resource estimates provide more than 100 years of [natural gas] production at current rates.” The same NPC study said natural gas will continue to be crucial to America’s energy and economic security beyond 2050. Meanwhile, a second NPC report said hydrogen can play an important role in reducing U.S. carbon emissions, but additional policies and incentives are needed to deploy it at the scale necessary to support the U.S. net zero target by 2050. The two are connected in that hydrogen produced from low-methane intensity natural gas with carbon capture and storage is the most economically feasible low-carbon option available and key to meeting the Biden administration’s hydrogen production and broader decarbonization goals. Taken together, the NPC reports underscore a piece of an all-of-the-above energy approach that is important to America’s energy future – if Washington gets its act together.
